Life can be hard, but it’s really the hard things that create the greatest value.

Generally, as we grow older and accumulate more information about the world around us we are changed by it. Most of us mature, grow wiser and become better than we were in our younger years. One observation throughout my life is that we tend to seek out the easy way. We are pleasure seekers, and it is common for us to avoid things we deem unpleasant. But there is a cost.

In most cases, these unpleasant things involve telling someone bad news or having a cavity filled at the dentist. But there are other things we avoid as well, such as learning a new language, fixing the parts of us that prevent us from becoming a better person, or spending a little more time on a project to make it exceptional rather than mediocre.

Mediocrity is a result of taking the easy way out. Most of us understand this term because our lives are scattered with mediocrity. The things we enjoy and love, however, are done with a higher level of interest and therefore exceptional. Those things that require more effort might be difficult and challenging, but are the things that have the greatest value in our lives. The result contributes to a better quality of life for us through the experience and for others we touch through our work and relationships.

I am not saying we should avoid the easy and pleasurable. A healthy life is balanced between hard work and play. At our family owned optical business, we strive at all times to provide an outstanding product and exceptional level of care for our patients. It’s the value added to a product that often makes the difference. This effort must be complemented by humor, pleasure and genuine interest. Otherwise we risk slipping into levels of mediocrity found in so many big “box” stores where there is seldom an investment to be exceptional and create the highest outcome.
